Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Not so much painkillers you want its diazepam that'll be the godsend. Other than that find yourself a good sports therapist and get some treatment on it. Try not to let it seize so keep active and the minute you feel able get down the gym or exercises through your therapist so you can strengthen the area and never go through the hellish pain again

Couple of years back higher up. Extruded disc. Trapped a nerve. Fucking agony. Needed accupuncture, physio and horse tranquilisers!

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
I'd go for the Spinal Epidural. If done properly you will have the fluid between the disc and spinal cord replaced with Painkillers and Steriods. This gave me 6 months pain free which allowed me to carry out enough pschio to reduce the condition.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Yes and suffered for 30 years. Had an op where I live now in France after years of being told by NHS specialists there was nothing they could do.

The French decided I needed an operation which included cutting away part of vertebrae 3.4 & 5 and scraping out arthritic growths on the interior of the spinal column, then grafting some bone back and now 2 years on i feel absolutely ready for pre-season training...

Oh found out supposedly mine was caused by road running (with shin splints) when younger... that and probably a shit batting stance...

Terrywait 5:26 - You have my fullest sympathies mate.
If i ever get a twang of the nerve i just go into panic mode thinking i'll be back there again.
You're right about the standing up/sitting down etc each one didn't last long and when i did find some kind of weird position where the pain eased it was bliss.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Can't remember which ones i had but i had two prolapsed discs.
I'm used to pain having two rare spine diseases, I've never had a day without it but 6 years ago when i had this the pain was something else.
Had really bad sciatica for months, i lost count of the amount of therapy i had, operations are too dangerous so that was off the table!

In the end i had to try learn to walk again, it used to take me 15 minutes to crawl to the toilet on my elbows and knees.

The best way to try and counteract any back pain is drink lots of water to keep hydrated and keep moving!

Good luck.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
I was L5/S1....don't think it matters which, still painful. I also have the muscle atrophy to attest to my issues.

I was desperate to avoid a fusion, if only due to the loss of flexibility. I swear by chiropractors and when I started with my current one (he's a sports injuries specialist) he X-Rayed my back.

Lovely.......continuous sport including professional cricket between the ages of 8 and 45 have left me with discs that marry with that of an 80 year old. I'm 57.

Ho hum......

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
As you can tell from the responses, there are varying degrees of prolapse. L4-L5 is certainly the most common. I did workers' compensation law (not sure what you call it over there) for a while. 90% of those cases were L4-L5 issues so I saw many folks trying to rehab it. If you can avoid surgery, do so at all costs. A disc fusion will temporarily offer relief but you are adding more weight for your other discs to carry which makes it more likely to happen to another one. Sadly there is no cure for this, there is only management which involves strengthening the core muscles to alleviate the load the disc carries and avoiding movements/activities that might aggravate it.

I have heard there is a new treatment in the works involving stem cell injections which has showed promise, but I don't know much about it.

I wondered why it didn't work......I ended up with an epidural (abut as unpleasant as you can get) then a spinal decompression.

After that lot I was fit for any and all sport, but it took 18 months to solve the problem.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Yup got mine about 15 years ago... finished me playing football cricket etc... had physio to begin with as I lost over 50% of my posture... once straightened up not too bad... got a load of scarring around the disc but only seem to suffer from sciatica since... don't do pain killers unless I really have to... done Tylex when it first went but that is dangerous stuff

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Freind has a de-hydrated disc (not the same I know) but they have told her there is no easy cure.

She has had cortisone injections but they only last a few months. They say they can fuse the two discs but are very reluctant to go down that road until the situation becomes totally unliveable.
